Position Summary
This position is responsible for providing interpretive services within the College.
Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Provide interpretation during lectures, labs, tests, field trips, work experiences, tutoring sessions, interviews, counselling sessions, one-to-one interpreting and platform interpreting at College events between Deaf, hard of hearing, Deaf-blind students, their peers and others; including instructors and other service providers.
  2. Explain the interpreter’s role to administrators, instructors, faculty and staff.
  3. Utilize student’s feedback and make any necessary adjustments to the interpretation.
  4. Obtain the required preparatory materials (lecture notes, print material, films, videos or resources pertaining to technical vocabulary) to prepare for assignments.
  5. Demonstrate professional boundaries and good interpersonal skills with students and all members of an educational team while providing support and feedback to team members.
  6. Maintain cooperative and mutually supportive relationships with students, interpreters and members of the college community by working collaboratively with consumers.
  7. Provide insight on the success of communication strategies to the Interpreting Services Department Supervisor, instructors and other members of the educational team.
  8. Assist the Interpreting Services Department Supervisor with departmental duties, when required.
  9. Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Completion of Grade 12 plus graduation from a recognized Interpreter Training Program is required.
  • At least three years’ experience in interpreting American Sign Language (ASL), contact varieties and oral interpreting in an educational setting is required. An equivalent combination of training and/or experience may be substituted for this required qualification.
  • Incumbents with the provincial Postsecondary Screen and the Written Test of Knowledge (WTK) are preferred.
  • Membership in the Westcoast Association of Visual Language Interpreters (WAVLI) is required;
  • Must possess excellent sign language skills to provide an effective linguistic match for Deaf-Blind, hard of hearing and Deaf students, as well as faculty and staff members by being fluent both receptively and expressively in ASL, contact variety, oral interpreting and other forms of visual/gestural modes of communication.
  • Must possess knowledge and appreciation of Deaf culture and issues facing Deaf, hard of hearing and Deaf-blind students in order to serve the needs of students at VCC with diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Must have a clear understanding of consecutive and simultaneous interpretation, ethics, history, best practices in the field and remain up-to-date with current issues related to the profession of interpreting.
  • Must be proficient in the use of email, MS Word, MS ACCESS, internet, videophones, and other communication technology used by Deaf people.

  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a team. Ability to establish and maintain effective, professional working relationships with students, staff and faculty.
  • Possess strong time management and organizational skills and be able to work independently under tight timelines.

Salary Range - Prorated based on FTE
PAYGRADE 30 – $36.52 – $42.80 hourly
