This position is responsible for providing technical and instructional support in the College Foundations Science laboratories ensuring that all laboratory apparatus, specimens, materials and instructional aids are prepared and set up for scheduled laboratory periods. Conducts demonstrations of equipment and experiments, assists students and marks student laboratory reports.
Job Duties/Responsibilities
1. Conducts laboratory demonstrations, provides assistance to students and helps supervise laboratory activities. Responds to students’ inquiries pertaining to laboratory matters and related subject material, referring students to instructors as required.
2. Prepares laboratory and field equipment and instructional support materials for class activities. Undertakes or arranges for the “take-down” of laboratories after completion.
3. Works with field samples and preserved dissection specimens. Prepares and maintains live cultures and specimens. Attends and helps supervise field activities as required.
4. Prepares, administers, invigilates and marks both oral and written laboratory examinations and quizzes. Prepares and maintains accurate records of student laboratory and examination performance.
5. Performs a wide variety of tasks relative to the operation and maintenance of laboratory apparatus and equipment. Ensures that the laboratory premises are clean and orderly and that laboratory materials are stored properly.
6. Maintains safe conditions in the lab and classroom and works with hazardous materials in accordance with WHMIS requirements.
7. Maintains inventory records. Monitors, orders and receives equipment and supplies.
8. Assists in the preparation, development and writing of new laboratory activities, experiments and assignments.
9. Advises and directs student aides as required.
10. Assists students and instructors in the use of computers in the classroom. Uses and maintains an inventory of software in the department.
11. Coordinates or participates in laboratory session scheduling.
12. Performs all duties in other specialized disciplines as needed.
13. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications
Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science Degree and 4 years of experience as a science instructional assistant at a post-secondary institution or an equivalent combination of training and/or experience may be substituted for the required qualifications.
    • Biology: Bachelor of Science in Biology.

Skills and Abilities

  • Proven interpersonal skills with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a team. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, supervisors and staff.
  • Experience using software applications for classroom instruction and inventory purposes.
  • Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment and apparatus.
  • Knowledge of WorkSafeBC WHMIS regulations.
  • Ability to work variable hours.

Salary Range - Prorated based on FTE
PAYGRADE 28: $33.72 to $39.61 hourly, plus payment in lieu of vacation and statutory holidays.
