Job Summary
This position is responsible for information literacy instruction, departmental liaison, collection development, and the provision of excellent reference service that includes the effective use of print and electronic information resources. The Librarian is also responsible for the provision of virtual reference service to users from BC colleges and universities.
Job Duties/Responsibilities
1. Provision of Reference Services
- Collaborate with users to define and solve their information needs using a wide array of print and electronic resources.
- Analyzes and responds to information requests from a diverse user population in a manner that encourages further enquiry and learning.
- Provides appropriate and accurate Virtual Reference service to college and university users.
2. Information Literacy Instruction and Development
- Provides instruction in information gathering and research skills.
- Collaborates with colleagues to design and develop instructional programs appropriate to users’ needs and which meet course objectives for both instructors and students.
- Continuously evaluates learning and revises programs appropriately.
- Designs and delivers library instruction and presentations using course development software.
- Enhances the skills of the team by providing assistance to and training for colleagues to develop new skills and share expertise.
3. Faculty and Staff Relations
- Liaises with Department Heads/Coordinators and colleagues to improve services to users.
- Builds effective library liaison with colleagues in instructional departments as well as the student services area.
- Shares expertise with colleagues and mentors new staff.
4. Marketing of Library Services and Resources
- Promotes library services and resources using print and electronic media.
- Uses assessment tools and techniques to evaluate and enhance services to users.
- Assesses new information technologies to determine if service needs are being met.
5. Professional Development
- Manages professional development and growth and remains current with new technologies and trends in librarianship including developing competencies in relevant emergent technologies.
- Monitors relevant information sources to continuously update knowledge of current developments in reference and user services.
- Explores and experiments with available technologies and their application to reference and user services.
- Develops a professional network to enhance expertise.
Area Hiring Criteria
Education and Experience 
  • Completion of a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Sciences from an accredited school of Library and Information Science or an approved (ALA/CLA) equivalent.
  • Two (2) to five (5) years recent reference and instructional experience preferably in an educational or post-secondary educational institution library.
  • Thorough knowledge of, and experience with, the content and formats of a wide variety of print and electronic information resources applicable to college and university library services.
  • Experience in materials selection.

Skills and Abilities 
  • Ability to provide advanced reference and research services to BC post-secondary students via the provincial Virtual Reference chat service.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computer applications including electronic databases, search engines, webpage development and design software, with course development software an asset.
  • Ability to exercise leadership and, as required, provide task supervision and act as the person in charge.
  • Flexibility and resourcefulness in carrying out assignments in a dynamic and rapidly changing environment.
  • Active participation in ongoing professional development activities to enhance professional skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in a constantly changing environment.
  • Excellent service philosophy with a demonstrated commitment to teamwork.
  • Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills, both orally and written.
  • Evidence of ability to work creatively and collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated success in planning, teaching and evaluating information literacy skills.
  • Ability and experience in developing innovative teaching and learning aids such as subject research guides and lab exercises in both print and electronic formats.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and time management skills.
  • Acknowledged ability to build effective library liaison relationships with colleagues in instructional and student services departments.
Salary Range - Prorated based on FTE In accordance with the VCCFA Collective Agreement
